@mr-minifig, the use case you describe was one of the design aims of NOOBS so I'm glad you think it's useful.

On a linux system you simply need to use dd to create an image of your SD card then use xz -9 -e or gzip to compress it (both formats are fully supported). The image can then be placed in the /images directory before first boot in order to allow the user to select it as an install option. (See https://github.com/raspberrypi/noobs/blob/master/README.md for further details).

If you need further help on how to do this on your platform, I suggest that you ask on the Raspberry Pi forums (http://www.raspberrypi.org/phpBB3/).

Just to clarify, you'll need to make an image of an SD card that doesn't have NOOBS already installed (i.e. a standalone installation of Raspbian or other OS). This can then be installed using NOOBS on a different card.

Just using a Image from a RAW startup, making modifications, making image, compress and put it on the NOOBS does not work - get a LBA missing error after it finishes writing my custom image to the card. What is the LBA it is complaining about?

Just writing a user guide for this very process. I'll upload a copy here
hopefully today.

Essentially the problem is that the new noobs images use a different
partition system to that of the vanilla images.
