Unfortunately, the specification only allows the cell level overrides shown here:

http://rubydoc.info/gems/axlsx/1.0.18/Axlsx/Cell
INLINE_STYLES

So if we want to apply a background fill (which is a style) to a specific range of cells, we need to create a new style and apply it to the range.

Something like this:

p = Axlsx::Package.new
wb = p.workbook
wb.styles do |s|
  blue_cell =  s.add_style  :bg_color => "0000FF", :color => "FF"
  wb.add_worksheet(:name => 'range of style') do |ws|
    ws.add_row [1, 2, 3]
    ws.add_row [4, 5, 6]
    ws["A1:A2"].each { |c| c.style = blue_cell }
  end
end

remember that worksheets are sparse, so you need to add your data first!
