I very much like the idea of an open, very flexible protocol to bring projects like this together. I ask myself though, why they chose a decentralized over a distributed workflow. it is like.. going one step in the right direction instead of going two, rigth away.

What do you mean? It's just a universal way for users to communicate with git forges. There's no server - it's already as distributed as possible.

it is federated==decentralized, which is inbetween centralized and distributed.

While interesting in theory, federated protocols come with their own drawbacks -- the biggest one being that actors in a federated network each have their own interests and incentives. Moxie Marlinspike wrote an interesting piece on the topic a while back.
We are fans of the "Fediverse", but the truth is that ForgeFed never took off, perhaps for some of the reasons Moxie laments. We'll see, maybe at some point it gets enough traction, in which case we'll consider ways to support it.
