This worked for me on the latest master, so is there a discrepancy between the code that's made it into the release 0.7 and the documentation?

Also, your example shows you passing a document into the validate_schema() method - that method validates your schema themselves, not documents against a schema, and should mostly be used internally just to fail early if you going to try to validate using a broken schema. Did you mean to type 'document_schema' in your third line?

I added the missing versionadded tag to the documentation, sorry about that. validate_schema() is a 0.7.1 feature.
