I've found the problem. The dependency Python-ruamel fails to build with Python 3.8 as discussed here. I'm logging this because people who are running rolling releases distros will definitely run into this. The fix is to simply use Python 3.7 or lower in your virtual environment. I bet there's a way to specify the version of python to use in setup.py.
