I don't believe this is possible to implement in Vim, see issues #23 and #36
"Vim's :match and matchadd() only works where there's actual content in the buffer. Until that changes, this will be impossible."
Happy to be proven wrong, as I too would love this functionality.

You could highlight where there's text (including whitespace) in the document. But it will look awful.
