JSON.parse('') throws an exception, so the json response of the request is null.

I get that this is frustrating though. iron-ajax is trying to walk a careful line between being easy to use but not adding too many additional special cases on top of what the browser does. There's also the issue that if we did want to provide a useful default it's not clear whether we should pick an object or an array.

Closing this, but if you feel strongly about it feel free to make your case.
