You are free to use or not use tools provided by the community. The tool is quite technical and is a UX on top of the API. Without knowledge about the search API or how auth works in SharePoint Online I can imagine it can be hard. That said the tool has thrived for many many years, helping a lot of people along the way.

If you want to contribute with a starter guide you are welcome to do so and would be helpful. There are also posts out there on how to use it like this one https://www.koskila.net/using-sharepoint-search-query-tool-investigate-search-index-issues-sharepoint-online/

And a query to list sites by id or path is not that hard, assuming you know the search schema - which is an uphill battle in knowing SharePoint entity types and their properties as well :)

I understand the frustration but venting on a github issue might not be the best way to get help :)

Good resources for help are

You will find people in the SharePoint community quite helpful and friendly when you ask in a nice way.

As for modern web parts you have the Highlighted Content Web Part out of the box for modern, and https://microsoft-search.github.io/pnp-modern-search/ from the community (v3 and v4 which both work and are supported).

Best of luck on your SharePoint journey.

I was able to get it working by setting authentication to "Authenticate using specific user account" and method "sharepoint online".

I am so exhausted. I've been struggling all day with just trying to create a web part that, from a specific list of sites, it only lists the ones a user has access to. My only result is feeling like I've been run over repeatedly by a steamroller.

I am completely new to Sharepoint and so far I am finding it absolutely infuriating. I've wasted several hours just trying to figure out how to implement a "Content Search" web part, thinking I had somehow broken the site settings, only to eventually find some little tucked away article somewhere that said that modern sites don't even support a large number of older web parts. :(
