I'm sharing this now because I just looked for how to add a blank page or new tab to the whitelist and I've finded (only on Chrome)
To make this, just add chrome://newtab/ on the whitelist box to add a new tab or blank page to it :)

For those still having issues with the plugin closing new windows and tabs, ensure you have the 'Close tabs automatically' option selected so that the white-list textbox appears.
In it, add these three pages:

about:home
about:newtab
about:blank

These are for Firefox, though Chrome will have something similar, as described above. These are especially useful with the newly introduced "Firefox View" tab in the developer edition. It has a blank URL, forcing any new window with an empty tab to be auto-closed immediately.

Not working properly. Strange because add this works and not automatically close a new tab but duplicates's badge always counts them and marks as duplicated.

I wonder how to make this work in Firefox. I tried about:home and about:newtab does not seem to work. I wonder if there's a chrome:// url just like you can get the old about:config page with chrome://global/content/config.xhtml

I'm seeing this as well on firefox. I enabled "Close tabs automatically" and now can't open a new blank tab via Ctrl-T.
Oddly, for a few moments I could open a tab via the 'New Tab' menu but now that's not working either. There does seem to be some times when it works, but it's hit and miss (and usually miss).

Addons that I have which may be relevant:

• Multi-account Containers
• Temporary Containers
• Sidebery
• Vimium C

Please, could this be fixed? I'm on Firefox/macOS if it is relevant.

Sometimes, when I notice one tab consuming a lot of CPU, I just open a new tab in that window and Discard everything else to get it under control. But with this bug, it keeps alerting a duplicate for me... And when I do need to close duplicates I can't just click Close all anymore, because it will close my needed new tabs, and refresh those resource hogs again......

Couldn't it just completely ignore New Tabs? Or add some Matching Name Rules to conditionally ignore them?

Thanks, @keenminded, I did try this now, checked that the whitelist was in place, and it still closed ALL my 6 new tabs, in 6 windows... 😞

Also, I think that would hardly be a fix, since I don't want to close tabs automatically. I'd like to be alerted only so that I can make a decision on a case basis.
