check that you don't have 2 copies of the schema file installed.
ppa version probably installs to
`````` /usr/share/glib-2.0/schemas/```
install script from git installs to
/usr/local/share/glib-2.0/schemas/
from gnome-shell-system-monitor-applet.

I checked that, it was not the case.
I found something else:
msgfmt: Öffnen der Datei »/home/finn/src/gnome-shell-system-monitor-applet/po/pt_PT/system-monitor-applet.po« zum Lesen fehlgeschlagen: Datei oder Verzeichnis nicht gefunden
so I renamed
gnome-shell-system-monitor-applet/po/pt_PT/system-monitor-applet.pot
to
gnome-shell-system-monitor-applet/po/pt_PT/system-monitor-applet.po
Now the installation from GIT works :)

OK the PPA works now too ... a bit confusing ... maybe I did something last night which worked out after reboot or it is because I removed gnome-shell-extensions-dock. I have no Idea.

stick with the git version, there has been quite a number of fixes since webupd8 took the snapshot for their package.
@paradoxxxzero: the Portuguese translation will need to be renamed!
