Thanks for the pointer!
I don't use channels nor the root user. I guess the Nix installer created the channel for root.
I resolved the issue by:
- Running
nix-channel --remove nixpkgsasroot - Deleting the
channelssymlink in/nix/var/nix/profiles/per-user/root/
Now, nil builds successfully.

Seems like #30. Maybe it's an issue of your Nix installation, but I have no idea why nix want to read channels.
