I suspect it would be useful to "pin" the rustc version to use for building nil anyway
We provides flake.lock which does exactly this. If you use our flake (or via compat default.nix), it should by default use the rustc from our pinned nixpkgs, which is known to be good.
Did you manually use follows to force wire nixpkgs to 22.05?

Ah, yes I did pin nil's nixpkgs input to my system's nixpkgs - I'd love for the closure of dependencies for these tools to be as small as possible. I think I have a code change, will submit that as a PR.
