If you update to the latest beta, you should be able to disable zoning by adding:
(setq live-disable-zone t)
in your user pack
Please let me know if this fixes things for you...

Also, out of interest does everything else work smoothly over an ssh connection?

I tested
(setq live-disable-zone t)
and it did work, thanks a lot!
The only other thing I can really think of is the long load time.
