Sorry, this is confusing and regretful. I've been toying with a proposal to actually deprecate this function because of this.

That extract actually attaches the new context (meaning it is set in the pdict) and returns the old context from the pdict. So that undefined is bc there is no active context when extract is called.

You can use extract_to/2 instead and pass :otel_ctx.new() as the first argument to get back a context variable.

No worries, extract_to/2 is working as expected and solves the issue.
