TMSU does not bother to check the validity of tag names during a query, merely that they exist. I see what you mean though: the error could be more informative and consistent. I'll take a look at adding the validity check.

I've just started looking at this issue but I think changes in #45 to relax name restrictions make isue no longer valid. Are you happy for me to close it or are do you think it still exists in another form?

Looks like it. tmsu tag --tags='-foo' foo works and tmsu files -- -foo works.
I tried to dig up an invalid case that behaved weirdly, and the closest I got was this:

tmsu files \\

tmsu: tag name cannot be empty

But maybe that's just me misunderstanding what the (s)hell escaping is doing there, I thought that TMSU would receive a single \ from that. tmsu files '\\' works more like I expected (error about 'tag names cannot contain /')
