Try using degC instead of tempC.

from ruby-units.

yes, work like a charm!!! thanks, your answer was incredibly rapid !!!!!

RubyUnits::Unit.define('thermal_expansion_coefficient') do |unit|
  unit.definition = RubyUnits::Unit.new('1mm') / RubyUnits::Unit.new('1m') / RubyUnits::Unit.new('1degC')
  unit.aliases   = %w[fi thermal_expansion_coefficient]
end

 a = "100mm".to_unit
=> 100 mm
 b="30tempC".to_unit
=> 30 tempC
 c="21tempC".to_unit
=> 21 tempC
 (a * (b-c) * "2fi".to_unit).convert_to("mm")
=> 1.8 mm

from ruby-units.
