Sounds like you haven't got a working connection to the ENC28J60. Which pin are you using for CS in your sketch? Default for EtherCard is 8 but default for UIPEthernet (and Arduino Ethernet) is 10 on an UNO. So when you are changing library you either need to rewire or change the initialization of one of the libraries.

Maybe you could add the wiring-infos to the README or refer to the orig. Ethernet Library page.
