how can a dot in the file name be differentiated with a dot in the extension? too much work

what can be done is add some rules such as .tar.gz -> .tgz

This is actually surprisingly easy. We make an array of multi-dot extension and test whether a string ends with them. If so, we override $extension — probably easiest to just use a regex to test, like /.ta\r.gz$/i

It's at least as easy as special casing .tar.gz to .tgz — detection is essentially the same it's just how we handle it ($ext = tgz or $ext = tar.gz)

Ideally this will be properly solved with the upcoming switch to X-Sendfile which will keep original filenames and mime type. Until then a ghetto rig should work
