It's also worth noting that sometimes I get this error and it legitimately doesn't send...

It appears you're sending EHLO/HELO before receiving the 220 from the server, this may be the issue, still investigating.

Hi,
There have been complaints about communicating with Exchange before so I guess it's a wider issue. I'm not able to access any Exchange servers myself so haven't been able to test it but I'll try to set up one.

Just throwing this out there, but from the best I can tell, it writes HELO before it receives the 220. Not 100% sure, but that may be part of the problem?

This might have been the problem indeed. Changed the behavior with ea5f4a6 so EHLO should be never sent before successful greeting from the server. Could you check if this resolved your problem?

It appears to work more efficiently now. It was very sporadic to begin with, so I'll close this for now and report back if it's not working.
