I think the express error is caused as a result of the 'Unknown encoding' error though I'm not certain. I can't reproduce the error on my machine and seems to be related to an API change introduced with 0.6. Could you let me know which version of node you're using please?

on my machine v0.6.14
heroku use a v0.4.7 by default (https://devcenter.heroku.com/articles/nodejs-versions/)
setting the node version in the package.json file solve my problem!
