perhaps this isn't specifically a BehaviorSpace issue? I should try to reproduce it simply with two HeadlessWorkspaces in the same VM.

Two ideas on how we might be able to work around this:

  1. Spin up separate JVM instances for each background thread when there are native libraries and communicate results using some manner of IPC.
  2. Include the extension jar on the main classpath and have each load of it create new instances of the class manager. This gets around the native-reloading problem but creates (potential) new problems if authors use static fields in their extensions.

I see that https://github.com/NetLogo/Arduino-Extension/blob/hexy/src/main/java/ArduinoExtension.java has an unload method with some special code for unloading native libraries. I wonder how well it actually works
