This looks like a bug related to detecting the project's language. We should fix that.

After investigating the issue a bit more, it turns out that my guess that it was related to detecting the project language wasn't the issue.
The issue is that the kotlin plugin has a transitive dependency on ANTLR (though the semver library). The ANTLR version is older than the one used by graphql-java.
Because the plugin classpath for gradle is a flat classpath, there's not much we can do about this from the plugin perspective. The workaround is simple though; change the order of the plugins in your build script. I've added documentation about this issue here: Netflix/dgs#25
