Note that the ESGF records the following options for frequency as opposed to table names:
- 3hr (3573)
- 6hr (1952)
- day (13057)
- fx (2264)
- mon (35607)
- monClim (342)
- subhr (229)
- yr (799)

We can't distinguish L from A short of making a stash item-by-item choice -- but then, what is the criteria to use?

We'd have to distinguish L and A by the CMIP tables if we decide to do it. Every instinct says not to bother, and use the ESGF frequency names, supplemented by _pt
as necessary.

Worth noting that there is a discussion about moving away from using table names in CMIP7: A Nomenclature Suitable for Uniquely Defining CMIP Variables. However, for this project it may be better to stay with the CMIP6 naming structure.

Thanks Martin, I hadn't seen that. It might be better to use those as we are almost certainly not going to use the standard CMIP ones ... not least because we will have multiple fields in one file.

We've gone with the ESGF names with an additional pt for instantaneous
