Thanks. Could you try the beta version (1.70) via the play store? It has very different networking code so that might give us a clue.

I gladly would, and I could, if only I knew how to get the beta version.
When I search form "galaxy zoo" only the older version shows up.

Hi,
The problem is, the app has to be installed, or you don't see anything
about betas.
I had un-installed it.
Now I've re-installed it, applied to be a beta tester or whatever, and
I'm waiting for notification that I can download the beta.

I did not think that you needed to apply for anything. It should be a simple matter of choosing to install the beta. I certainly don't have any notification about anything that I should approve. Sorry.

Hi,
So after I installed the app, and applied for the beta thing,
I think it appeared in the app menu itself.... to get the beta version.
Frankly I forget exactly what happened.
Good news: it now works.
Not so great news: it needs some work for a 4" device.
I mean some of these galaxies are only a few milimeters across. Need zoom.
And the target galaxy isn't centered on the screen.
I'll post a couple of bug reports.

That's great to know. I guess I'll release this version properly in a few days' time. I think the previous version might not work so well with unreliable or slow networks, but maybe this one handles that better.
I'm afraid we can't do anything about centering the galaxy in the image. That's part of what they need humans for, I guess. They probably already make some effort to center it - after all, they are trying to take pictures of galaxies.

The centering issue has to do with the poor use of screen real estate that
I mentioned.
Since the images are mostly black, you don't notice that the image isn't
centered on the screen (which is also black).
This is particularly bad, because the GZ instructions say to deal only with
the object in the center of the image.

Oh, and my network connection was very good, and I tried it at other
locations. It didn't work under any network conditions. But oh well,
problem solved.

you don't notice that the image isn't centered on the screen (which is also black).
It should ideally be centered horizontally and vertically. Please file a separate bug about that.
