This is a very good point, it didn't occur to me that onbeforeunload happens before the "stay on the page" alert!

SockJS-client indeed does close the connection on the onbeforeunload event. This is because Firefox often leaks websockets connection if a sockjs connection is established after onunload event. In order to mitigate this, SockJS indeed closes all sockjs connections on onbeforeunload event.

I don't think there is a workaround for this.
