This is probably deliberate, isn't it? The asterisk isn't really the multiplication sign ×

Monospaced fonts are usually targeted at coders, and the asterisk is the multiplication sign in all programming languages that I know of. It was intended to be used as such in ASCII, AFAIK because it was hard to make ×, x and X look different at very low resolutions.

Nowadays, some mono fonts align it with the math operators, other keep it above like a call to a footnote. I prefer it aligned, but it is a matter of taste, of course.
