Had the same problem, fixed it by replacing launcher = Popen(command) with launcher = Popen(command,shell=True) in transform.py.
Should I create a PR?

This issue is really...ancient.
Personally I have already stopped using xkeysnail.
@dinkonin I will keep it open for you. Please close it when you feel necessary.

Does anyone know the actual issue here? Is it that popen does exec and hence pauses xkeysnail from running or?

The keymapper process should not really be launching any apps in the first place. My fork has an issue tracking the correct and secure way this should be done if you're interested:
It should be pretty easy to hookup.
