Yeah, python3 -c 'import pyaml' is the line that's "wrong" there.
As Installation sections says - It's a regular package for Python 2.7 (not 3.X).

Alas, I've never used and/or tried it under python3, so naturally it doesn't work there.
In this particular case - "unicode" indeed doesn't exist there - only "str" and "bytes".

Fairly sure adapting for python3 should be easy - just use something like six for types and whatever potentially incompatible stuff, but don't use it myself yet so not much point.

Patches welcome though, but please don't use "separate code for py3" approach or 2to3 there - afaict both of these are major pain to maintain.

Thanks much for the help. I'm suffering novice pains with python generally and the help eases things.
Work's as you said with python 2. However, I needed to install the python-dev package to prevent 'Python.h not found' for the PyYAML install. I am using ubuntu 13.10.
