Is there a writeup on this somewhere? Is it based on ram values, alignment state, etc as a seed?

I tested this on a branch of the core I have. It appears to be based on the initial ram value of the game. If the core does not reset ram values, the number of steps is random, if the game resets ram to a state of all 00, the steps match your recording.

NES.zip
You can verify here, the option for ram values is in the Advanced menu item.

Thanks for the quick reply! I tried using the core you linked, though, and I got the same error. The only setting I changed was Ram Clear Value. I set that to $00. I also tried resetting the core after changing the setting, but that didn't work, either. Is there something else I need to do to make this take effect?

I'm not sure if there's a useful writeup on this anywhere. I don't know the coding side of things, I just know how it works on the NES. There might be some good information in one or both of these FAQs if you're up to digging through them:

hmm I tried it three times and reproduced it each time, as long as clear ram is set to 00.

to clarify it clears the ram when you load a rom, not hit reset (ram is not cleared at reset typically). Did you reload the rom? or start the core fresh?

I booted up the MiSTer, loaded the core, changed the ram setting, then loaded the ROM. Still ran into the same problem. Here's another video:

Did I miss a step somewhere?

Actually that's embarassing, I had the setting saved on $FF not $00. Can you give that a try?

kozzbot avatar kozzbot commented on September 2, 2024

FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF....That did the trick, thanks!

Now, is there a way to make this adjustment with the standard NES core, or do I need to use the one that you sent me? Also, what is the core that you sent in the zip file?

It's a branch i've been working on for a while that I plan to merge eventually. It adds some more options that speed runners have wanted like random cpu/ppu alignments and showing the borders and things. There's no way to clear ram to a value with the currently released core though, so I guess use that one for now if you need to count steps.

I see. Well I'll look forward to it being incorporated into the main core in the future, but thanks for sharing for now!
