I don't see how it could be possible. The main problem is lack of free GPIO pins. There is USER_IO connector with 7 GPIO for core use. But i don't think it will cope with 33MHz. It's open-drain and targeted for lower clock, may be up to 10MHz.
Anyway, it's up to you how to improve the core. It's hobby project and anyone is welcome to participate.

Oh lordy this would be a bit monumental to say the least. I am trying to figure this stuff out in my spare time and thought of something similar. Lack of gpio bandwidth is only part of the hurdles. And modding this core seems much more difficult than most others it seems. 4 bits by 8mhz would actually probably be enough bandwidth for a sound card to operate, LPC does have within its spec to run lower clock implementation IIRC. But after translation externally, latency would end up sinking it. A friend of mine tried this on an 815 chipset based P3 many years back and found that LPC is not so good for realtime application. LPC-ISA has been done many times before.

From my point of view ao486 is able to provide enough environment for games and apps of that age without external addons. Just need improvements of the core.
