tmux-session with panes? about dotfiles HOT 4 CLOSED

Not sure, I haven't tried it. Saving the contents of panes will entail saving & restoring their positions and running programs as well, since many panes in tmux are not open with an interactive shell, but with a specific command that's running inside (at least I do). It won't be trivial.

In my case, skipping panes is good enough, since I mostly treat secondary splits as something temporary and don't need it persisted after restarts.

That makes sense. If I could get panes to just restore with their directories, I'd be satisfied. Any pointers on how I can modify your script to solve that?

tmux list-panes will list all panes for the current window together with their dimensions. You could start with that. You should save the dimensions of each pane, then reuse those dimensions when restoring them.
