I can think of ways this could be realistic, but I can first see celeron asking: How does this add to the gameplay? Forget adding realism, how does this improve the player's experience?

Realism is for boring people!
Just imagine this: Maybe you expand this 'lava effect' into more blocks, lets say, into stone blocks. When a stone block is cover by lava, and is next to a clay block, the stone block could 'change its properties' and would change into a clay block or another type of block (metamorphosis-like effect).
It's not only for wood or stone this could happen, when sand is cover by lava, it could turn into glass or sandstone, when lava gets in contact with water, it could turn into stone (adding realism? idk)
The point is: lava could change things on its way, so maybe you could use it's flow for your benefit !

OK, good ideas, but again the question is, how does this improve the gameplay?

As you may imagine, when things can get metamorphosed is just a matter of time to do some farming, When you know that a rock besides a clay block can be changed into clay just by some lava or time itself, what would you do: scout for some clay blocks or just put a rock at it's side and wait for it to get changed?.
This would make the game easier for newbies, open the door for new ways to play (farming materials is a really good way to pass time, instead of exploring miles and miles of caves just for nothing)
Guess the feature-request changed from some burned wood into the capacity of materials to turn into other materials...

Closing old issues (the stuff here isn't totally worthless though)
