The above figure illustrates the idea that calibrated abundances can be biased but still give unbiased fold changes. But it doesn't illustrate the logic of how the calibration works. The suggestion to use naturally occurring taxa as a reference appears to be novel and the logic is not super obvious, so probably deserves a more detailed figure demonstrating it (h/t to Jacob Nearing for this suggestion).
