I think "Predict next release time" does not describe the setting well enough. I didn't understand this functionality at all until I read this thread and thought instead that this setting just determined whether or not release predictions are displayed.

The settings in the Smart Update submenu currently are

  • Skip entries with unread chapter(s)
  • Skip unstarted entries
  • Skip entries with "Completed" status
  • Predict next release time

The issue is that the first three options describe under what conditions an entry will be updated, but the last option does not and instead descibes some process that is carried out without describing the consequences of that process or why it's relevant to updating. I would propose that the last option should be phrased more like

  • Skip entries until predicted release time

Or maybe

  • Only update after predicted release time

That’s just how smart update works.

If you want to bring back the old behavior, go to Settings > Library > Smart update > disable the 4th parameter.

I suggest reverting to the old update system until the algorithm figures out the manga’s schedule.

Oh. My. God. Thank you. And here I thought I got some kind of connection problems.

Haha, it was nothing.

I thought it was better to keep the smart update on to decrease load. In any case, if I do disable it, how long does the algorithm take to figure out the schedule? Can we have insight on prediction algorithm and how disabling the 4th parameter will affect it?

Smart update's Predict Next Release Time tries its best to guess at which interval a library entry is updated (e.g. once every 7 days for a weekly simulpub) and then only actually queries the website 7 days after the last release (from my understanding)

It is better. That said, the algorithm employed is not the sharpest tool in the shed. The logic behind it seems to have some gaps that make the prediction jump either a few days before the actual release, or a few days after.

That’s why I suggest you train it for a few weeks by making the app consistently look for updates, and once the algorithm figures out the correct intervals, switch back to predictive smart update.

These are great suggestions. I was in your shoes a few weeks back, not sure what the condition meant.
