Bummer. I'd urge you to migrate from the mailing lists to another system that does have a public archive. My experience is that a large fraction of the value of mailing lists for open-source projects is in their public archives: you can save both your time and that of your users if new users can find answers to some of their questions in the archive without having to ask again. Would GitHub Discussions work?
You could also consider publishing a one-time dump of the existing Checked C mailing list archives if you think the information there is still relevant and you can get GDPR approval (possibly after some redactions).
