Hi, since icon textures usually exist in a limited number of sizes in a raster format, trying to use a different intermediate size results in a blurred icon. Actually, this already happens for some application icons that don't have the desired size. The stock dash uses this discrete set of sizes and I stayed with it's default size management so far.

I'm not sure how ugly the result is. Try to edit line 31 in myDash.js file (if you are using version 10, otherwise it's easy to find the line at the beginning of this file) adding further sizes to the alliconSize array. For instance try replacing
this._allIconSize = [ 16, 22, 24, 32, 48, 64 ];
with
this._allIconSize = [ 16, 22, 24, 32, 34, 36, 38, 40, 42, 44, 46, 48, 64 ];.
I don't know if a lower resolution icon is upscaled or vice versa a higher resolution one is downscaled.

Do you know any dock that handles its size in a continuous way or that gets over the limited screen size problem in some clever way? The only thing that comes to my mind is to use padding and spacing to give the illusion that all the available space is always used.

Unfortunately, this led to GNOME Shell error:

good.

Docky scales icon, but I can't remember, whether it was continuous.
Unity Launcher solves the limited size with a stack of icons at the
end of the launcher. Other solution may be scrollable dock.
