Something about how monger parses operators is lost when I use assoc to create a new map with more keys.. .:/

Monger does not parse operators. The exception is coming from the Java driver: you are passing a map of updates where you really wanted to pass a document (a map of conditions, I guess). And those cannot have $ in them.

Maybe what want is monger.collection/save, not update.

To clarify: Monger converts Clojure maps to DBObject instances and passes those on to the Java driver. From there it works exactly as in Mongo shell.

(mc/update-by-id "mycollection" id {$set {:updated_on (java.util.Date.)}})

is probably what you really want. If you need/want to pass in full map, use monger.collection/save-and-return and make sure that map has :_id set (then it will result in an update).

I can't believe I missed that. I came back to this issue about a minute ago to close it after realizing I forgot $set. :) Thanks for the quick responses though!
