The magic number 3 is the sequential numer of the link in the graph and yes I would agree it is not obvious. I will add some more info about this in the docs. I think the idea given in another issue about classes for styling links is the way to go.

I also think classes will help make it easier to understand and use. But it's cool to have an explanation on this magic number in the meantime.
