Because admittedly there is almost nothing to check in LPCM, I think we have to examine three strategies a bit beyond LPCM conformity alone.

  1. The LPCM is implemented properly with its container (if any), such as verifying that the container's declared duration, bit depth, channel count, etc corresponds to actual data size.
  2. Assess for digital traits of the encoding (similar idea to QCTools with raw video) but here we could test things like ensuring that all channels have some sort of zero (test for meaningless channels), test for bit depth padding. I'm curious if signed LPCM allows for both positive zero 0x10000000 and negative zero 0x00000000 (?).
  3. Assess for analog traits that seem suspicious, such as overly random behavior, concurrent peak audio values, abnormally low peak audio values, discrepancies between negative and positive peak values, inverted channels, etc.
