Use type = "vcs" instead, that's what I do, but I usually give a git:// url instead, not sure that with https:// composer will find out by itself that your vcs is git, nevertheless you should try it

It's drupal/redis, not md-systems/redis. The name of the repository is not relevant, only what's in the composer.json.

both corrections were required -- 'vcs' and 'drupal/redis'. site is up & running with Redis. now to figure out helpful tests ...
