The original JS implementation asked too many simultaneous questions:
- How do we solve the technical challenges of motion on the web platform (e.g. missing platform infrastructure for transitions, gestures, etc.)?
- What does an idiomatic JS API feel like for Material Motion? (Probably a lot more functional than the Java/ObjC implementations.)
- What tools should we use to include the best open source workflows?
- How do we make those tools work well within Google?
- How can we improve the Material Motion architecture to enable even more expression?
Trying to solve these questions simultaneously had a tendency to retard project inertia. Thus, we're now aiming for a more faithful port of the native architecture to JavaScript, using the Angular team's TypeScript tooling to achieve internal/external harmony. This will enable us to focus on the hard technical problems (e.g. how does a transition work on the web).
Sometime in the future, we can revisit the other questions around functional APIs and expanding the number of things Material Motion can express. For now, closing all issues that aren't relevant to our near-term plans.
