Yes. It also happens in Menta. Not a big deal as I mentioned, just odd.

I should mention I'm running MATE 1.6.0 on Ubuntu 12.04.

I have the same problem, with mate-terminal 1.6.1. I have 'Use custom default terminal size' unchecked in the profile. I alway get a first terminal with 22 lines, while all following terminals get the expected 24 lines. I'm glad I'm not the only one. Although the problem is apparently still a mystery. O, I'm running Ubuntu 12.10 'quantal' now. Not a biggie, but somewhat irritating ;-)
