Is this for just users, or for developers or both?

from manageiq.org.

garrett avatar garrett commented on July 25, 2024

The download section is primarily for users and those wanting to "kick the tires".

We'll have developer documentation under community, and a link from documentation to the developer docs. It makes sense to have a link to developer docs at the bottom of the download page too, under the "next steps" section that will be there (in issue #27).

(BTW: The difference between the two sections: Community is about connecting and contributing. Documentation is about how to use the software.)

dneary avatar dneary commented on July 25, 2024

Yup, just users. I'll have information for developers in the "Community" pages.

We do not have an installer for AWS. I also think we should consolidate the instructions for oVirt and RHEV into one, rather than have them as 2 different deployment platforms. I have tried to do this, but have not been able to figure out how to have "oVirt/RHEV" or "oVirt/Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization" as a deployment type (both cause parse errors).

garrett avatar garrett commented on July 25, 2024

If instructions still differ between oVirt and RHEV, they should be separate types.

I still have to update the types — I have been working on other things while waiting on revised content for the download page. I will address this next week.

dneary avatar dneary commented on July 25, 2024

@mfeifer & @jbrooks have both made improvements to this. I will do a run-through on Monday to double check, but I think we're good here once we get a download in place & ensure the URLs work.

/cc @mscherer and @jrafanie for that last point

I defer to @chessbyte @dneary @johnmark @Fryguy as to what appliances get uploaded. We are currently building the 3 appliances from the newly re-cut repository created last night/this morning.
We should have builds internally from this repo with no testing done in 1-2 hours.

I believe we need to cut the anand branch and anand.1 tag and rebuild with that but I can upload whatever you want.

I have a PR to change to the vanilla anand release (pre-anand.1 tag) here:
ManageIQ/manageiq#2

from manageiq.org.

jrafanie avatar jrafanie commented on July 25, 2024

I will use the "release/manageiq-${platform}-${version}.${ext}" format: "release/manageiq-ovirt-anand.1.ova"

Basically, whatever is decided in ManageIQ/manageiq#2

from manageiq.org.

dneary avatar dneary commented on July 25, 2024

Reading through that pull request, I'm struck by the fact that we're not making our lives easy here.

@jrafanie, @Fryguy, @chessbyte : Please ensure that when you decide what you're calling the releases, please also co-ordinate with @mscherer on where the files go, and submit the necessary PR to the Download page in the manageiq.org repo to ensure that the links are correct.

from manageiq.org.

mscherer avatar mscherer commented on July 25, 2024

Well, the files should go to the release container on rackspace, and they will appear transparently on http://releases.manageiq.org/ . ( I think having a separate vhost is easier on my side for low level technical consideration on ansible ). But the download page should point to the link there, and that should do the trick.

garrett avatar garrett commented on July 25, 2024

Okay, I've added deep links to the integrated docs to both the documentation and community pages.

Oops! Wrong bug. (Sorry!)

@mscherer The nightly builds were uploaded as per the conversation with @dneary, @johnmark, @chessbyte and others and are visible in http://releases.manageiq.org/.
I was informed one easy way to keep the "latest" link is to just upload the same image twice, once as the nightly filename and once as the latest filename.

It was decided on the call that the nightlies would have this format:

# manageiq-${platform}-master-${YYYYMMDD}-${sha1}.${ext}
# manageiq-${platform}-devel.${ext}

And would look like this:

manageiq-ovirt-master-20140613-8d9d1b8.ova
manageiq-ovirt-devel.ova

We would always upload the new timestamped appliance and replace the *-devel file.

It was decided on the call that the anand appliance would have a filename like this:

# prerelease: manageiq-ovirt-anand-1-rc1.ova
# stable: manageiq-ovirt-anand-1.ova

Whenever it's decided to branch and tag, we can do a build of anand and upload the appliance images. It may take a few tries to build off of the branch but shouldn't be difficult.

I'm on PTO tomorrow, Wednesday, so please get me today if you have questions/concerns.
