have you verified with a scope that the pins are working as expected?
Are you using pull-ups/downs?
Check the datasheet for other peripherals that may be using those pins. There is no obvious reason it should not work.

You were right. The board I am using, the Wemos D1 R32, has a pull-down and the built in led in the GPIO2.
That was the problem, I desoldered those components and it working fine now.
