Yes, I noticed this issue, too.
I don't know an exact solution for it.
The previous fix is a temporary workaround, not the correct implementation.
I, however, think that having a partially broken icon is obviously better
than having no icon at all.
So I keep that fix. In theory, XGetImage should retrieve the icon from tray
apps.
Actually, it failed to get the image for all gtk 2& 3 apps.
I used XCopyArea as a fallback, which grabs the partially broken icon.
We need a better tray icon implementation.
Seriously, we need a implementation for the new xdg(kde) icon notifier spec
and deprecate the xembed based systray.

More recently I have noticed that the tray icon of a GTK3 application
(Audacious) on my system is not drawn correctly, see below. The tray icon
my GTK2 application (xpad) was drawn correctly, until I ported it from GTK2
to GTK3. The status icon became corrupted too.

Do you know how to resolve this issue?
