Lutris 0.5.16 does download its updates in the background, just for this reason. You no longer get that startup dialog, instead download progress appears at the bottom of the sidebar now.

Can you provide a log for us? Something else is going on. Run this at your terminal:

flatpack run net.lutris.Lutris -d

I think that's the command. Give us the terminal spam once it has managed to start.

Actually, lutris 0.5.16 never download updates....

Gah, neither does 0.5.15! I wrote the code for this inside out, upside down, and backwards. It actually only downloads new versions.json if that file is missing outright.

You've fixed it, but it doesn't explain why @bjoern-tantau is having trouble starting Lutris.

Trouble is, that I can't reproduce it at the moment. At least not when I deactivate wifi.

I feel like Lutris starts normally after it has launched with an internet connection in the last x days or hours. But I am back home now with wifi. I've deactivated wifi and will try to keep an eye on it in the next few days.

By the way, @strycore, I've provided some more commenting, where you indicated it was needed. Hope that helps.

@bjoern-tantau, I expect it's something else that isn't the updates (especially if they are broken!), but I've no idea what.

The log might help us see just where it's getting blocked during startup.

@danieljohnson2 thanks for the docstrings update ^^

If there is a delay before launching a game that's launched from a shortcut then it's really not caused by any runtime updates. I also doubt it's related to network requests. I've used the Steam Deck offline recently and there was no delay when running games.
