I would like a build to reproducible entirely from a CMake "host-config". I believe this is what we originally discussed. To make this work we need a low overhead way of generating these files "on demand" via uberenv. If there is a way to cache the spack clone I think that would be fine.

I see 2 different points in your answer:

  • All information for a build should go in the host-config (including build_type, omp, API support).
  • Need for a cached spack, (especially in CI I guess).

Yes, that's right. Is this achievable?

First point is easy, it’s mostly a "strategic" decision :), I’m almost there (with the hash in the host-config name).
Second point will need a bit more work. I’ll keep you posted.
