The problem with this is that it requires knowledge of the remote repository. While we could ask the user for the username/organization the repo will be under on GitHub, the user may not even be using GitHub at all, even if it is the most common case.

Hmm, good point.
What about like, the ability to override some of the templates? like ~/.lita/templates/handler/README.md.tt and I can override the template?

Feel free to open a pull request if you have an approach you like. In general, I think I'd rather leave this up to the developer to add if they want.
