Okay this happens because the preview window seems to handle its own mapping animation (i.e. scale/fade whatever, like Cinnamon does to all other windows), then Cinnamon wants to throw its own animation on top of that.
If you disable mapping effect in Cinnamon-Settings->effects, this issue goes away.
Should not be a big deal to fix.

I removed the animation but the problem still occurs. It might be the magic/strange/creative factor calculation which interferes with Clutter's positioning. Anyway, the jumping can be disabled when setting the window gravity to NORTH_WEST in src/js/ui/mainWindow.js:97.
This way, the preview window isn't always 100% centered but IMHO this is better than the jumping window.
I can create a Pull Request, if anyone cares.

In archlinux with or without effect, center of screen is +/- the top left of the preview window.
