Workaround 2.

VLC has the option to choose audio source.
HDMI and internal.
I chose internal and it was system wide audio working.
Except Firefox. Chrome worked fine.

I'm not sure if this is the same issue and if this report is desktop-related, but my system also struggles to remember and/or reconnect to the correct output.

Usually, when I plug my TV via HDMI to my laptop, I have to select the HDMI audio output manually. When I unplug, it does automatically switch to the laptop speakers at first. And if I plug in the HDMI again, it does automatically switch to the HDMI output...

That is until I shut it down. Next time I boot it up, it has no output selected, so I have to select it manually. And then, when I plug into the HDMI again, it doesn't remember to switch to the HDMI output.

It's not a problem for me, because it only takes a couple of seconds to switch manually, but it is a minor annoyance. I had to install Indicator Sound Switcher to make the process quicker.

This issue is still open though, how come nobody's responded here in 5 years?
